I came upon this turtle on a hot Texas summer day. A fence blocks her path to the nearby pond. The goal is in sight yet, impossible for her to reach. I decided to transport the turtle to the larger neighborhood lake about a half mile down the serpentine country road.

While walking, I thought about the Native American symbolism of turtle to represent Mother Earth, the giver and sustainer of life. Mother Earth, our planet that is worthy of appreciation, admiration and loving care. We have a responsibility to show gratitude and kindness for all of the gifts our beautiful living planet provides.

I recall my childhood memories of when I was called turtle because of my slow and deliberate ways. Also, I call to mind the many times I withdraw into my shell as a safeguard. For me, the turtle represents determination, persistence and protection.
